Such Thoughts Go Through My Mind

Tucson, AZ - May 1976 - Age 29

Preface: Sitting on the grass leaning against a big tree on the University of Arizona greens while class was in session ... and thinking how quite and peaceful the campus was ... and the sometimes bizarre and sometime amazing journeys my life had already experienced.

Then the bell rang signaling the end of class .. and what was so serene a few seconds earlier now felt like chaos as people were mobbing the greens to get to their next class. I grabbed a pad of paper and pen from my bag and began to write.

Such Thoughts Go Through My Mind

In a world of many tunes, what song should I sing? And in a world of playing roles, I want to find my thing? And in a world of spinning tops, what top should I fly? And in a world of bolted doors, what key should I try?

Cause when I’m all alone at home at night

Chorus - Cause when I’m all alone at home at night, such thoughts go through my mind. All alone in an empty room … what answers can I find? All alone in bed I’ll rest … with sweet visions of the past. All alone each new day start … will today I get my chance?

And in a world of rocket ships that go to outer space.

And in a world of rocket ships that go to outer space. And in a world of poverty, oh I guess it has its place. And in a world of peace and war, it makes no sense to me. And in a world of make believe, just what is reality?

Chorus - Cause when I’m all alone at home at night, such thoughts go through my mind. All alone in an empty room … what answers can I find? All alone in bed I’ll rest … with sweet visions of the past. All alone each new day start … will today I get my chance?

And in a world full of love, then why so much hate?

And in a world full of love, then why so much hate? And in a world of telephones (hello), yet we still can’t communicate. And in a world of black and white, I don’t know just where I fit. And in a world where the Lord might come … should I go and call it quits?

Chorus - Cause when I’m all alone at home at night, such thoughts go through my mind. All alone in an empty room … what answers can I find? All alone in bed I’ll rest … with sweet visions of the past. All alone each new day start … will today I get my chance?
